Know your first grader- At the beginning of the year I talked a little about the developmental stages of 1st graders. Here are a few pointers for this time of year. The sun is rising later and setting earlier, the leaves are changing along with the weather. We all naturally feel more tired as the seasons shift. Your first grader may need a little more rest and a little more personal time to snuggle and connect. We are hearing a lot of tattling in first grade (which is totally normal) and we will be talking and learning how to handle difficult or even annoying situations. This time of year they begin to loose patience with their peers and we will spend time addressing this.
Ticket Store, We will try and open the store this Friday. Any last minute prizes are appreciated. Small things like stickers, pencils and erasers are great! Also, gently used toys and books are great too.
In Math we are continuing our number sense unit. We are adding, counting and talking about things in terms of part, part, whole. At home they can be working on adding math facts with in 20. Check out our web site tabs for ways to practice your math facts.
Super Power of the week, Unity- This is a great time of year to talk about unity. Unity is working together as a whole. Celebrating with someone and taking care of someone when they are hurting.
In Zoo Phonics we will continue to work on the "bl" blend words.
Social Science Fridays- last Friday we explored maps and what they tell us. We also learned the major parts of a map, compass rose, title, and key. This Friday we will look a the earth and how it is divided into oceans and continents. We will also explore what resources come from where.
Homework- Read 80 minutes a week (20 min a day). Along with the homework menu. I have included a homework assignment that puts our newly learned map skills into real life practice. The Fire safety map is designed to be a team effort between parents and 1st graders. I am excited to see what they turn in!!!
Book Orders- The kids are so excited about book orders. The books are usually a pretty good deal and our classroom also earns free books. Ordering online is the easiest and fastest way to get your books. https://orders.scholastic.com/R62C4
Have a great week!
