Last week we started Science Fridays. On Fridays we will explore a science topic in depth. Our current science unit is observing Sun, Moon, and Stars and identifying patterns. Last week we explored shadows and how they move throughout the day. We made shadows moves with flashlights and we also observed shadows outside and watched how they moved. Our big question was, "Can a statues shadow move?" Ask your 1st grader what they found out. This Friday we will continue observing the sun's patterns and do more exploration with shadows.
In Math we are continuing to learn about reading time on a clock face. This week we are introducing reading digital clocks along with the clock face. Help your 1st grader identify times in their daily routine that are o'clock or half hour (leaving the house at 7:30 am, soccer starts at 4:00 pm). Jiji math (STmath) is also working on helping build clock reading skill. This is very challenging work.
Homework- Remember to read 80 min a week (20 min a day). This homework is required. Fill out the STAR reading, sign it and send it in on FRIDAY. The weekly homework menu is optional. Students can do these activities for more STARs. Be sure to sign it and turn it in on FRIDAY also.
Super Power of the week- Self-Discipline. Yes, we are spending another week on self discipline. It is such a complex virtue and needs a lot of unpacking and teaching. It is also a virtues that requires a lot of practice.
This week in Zoo Phonics we are learning words in the "at" family and reviewing words in the "an" family. Work on having your child signal the letter sounds as well as writing them. The added physical activity helps cement the spelling in their brains. I am including a great link to a YouTube video that shows the moves for each letter. Just in case you need help remembering.
