Welcome back!!! I hope you had a restful 18 days. I personally enjoyed not packing lunches for the 18 day break. But, I am soooo excited to be back with these amazing kids.
As we swing back into a normal rhythm you will notice your first grader being very tired this week. The next two weeks will be a flashback to the first weeks of school as we re-establish expectations and routines. Extra rest and early bed times will do your first grader a world of good.
Very similar to kindergarten, we are talking about January 1st graders vs. September 1st graders. They have grown so much and learned so much in our time together so far. In this theme we will be talking about higher behavior expectations (giving less warnings), higher expectations in our school work and an increase in independence. We will also be starting a new program called Daily 5 which will teach independence and stamina in reading and writing. I am so excited!
In math we are learning addition strategies. These will later translate into very helpful mental math skills.
This week in Daily 5 we are introducing "Read to Self. " Students are learning the 3 different ways to read a book, and to build stamina (total number of minutes of uninterrupted reading). Ask your first grader what the three ways to read a book are. Each of these lead to better comprehension and fluency.
In Zoo Phonics we will work on words in the "ind" family. Examples are: blind, find, hind, grind, kind, mind, wind. All of these word have the long "i" sound.
Science Friday is back! Our science until is all about plants and animals and their adaptations. Adaptations are the special characteristics an animal has to help it survive in their environment. We will be using fun resources like Wild Krats, Epic, Mystery Science, class books and much more. There will also be a project due at the end, so keep your eyes peeled for the assignment details to come home next week.
Homework- read for 20 minutes a night 8 or more stars are possible. Homework menu includes lots of great writing and math practice, giving them 10 STARs if they complete it all.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Keviwtch
